Ave North, Minneapolis, on May 20th at 3:00pm. The three speak to the diversity of north Minneapolis through their multiple identities, including Jewish, African American, White, straight, lesbian, Chinese, and Native American. Sherry Quan Lee lived in north Minneapolis as a girl. Her groundbreaking poetry book, Chinese Blackbird, was lauded as “a small and powerful miracle” by poet David Mura. Her other book is How to Write a Suicide Note: Serial Essays that Saved a Woman’s Life.

Anya Achtenberg, a poet and fiction writer, is a current resident of north Minneapolis. She is the author of three books. Her forthcoming novel, Blue Earth, is due out in August. Blue Earth delves into Minnesota’s history, including white farmers, Dakota people, and the largest mass execution in the history of the U.S.–the hanging of 38 Dakota men in 1862 in Mankato.

Christine Stark is a writer and visual artist who also lives in north Minneapolis. Her recently released novel, Nickels: A Tale of Dissociation, is a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award. She has also co-edited an international anthology on sexual violence and penned a poem for a double CD manga recorded by Brooklyn-based Fred Ho and the Afro Asian Music Ensemble.

NorthPoint Health & Wellness Gallery presents new work by Juxtaposition Arts VALT students and Studio Arts Apprentices April 10-May 25, 2012. Juxtaposition Arts’ Visual Arts Literacy Training (VALT) program is where dedicated students learn foundational drawing and painting skills during a rigorous 8-10 week course. Classes meet 3 days a week for three hours after school. Students must pass the course with a portfolio of work demonstrating their understanding of the principles of drawing and painting as well as the maturity to be disciplined. Once they pass VALT they are eligible to apply for an apprentice position in one of four areas: Studio Arts, Environmental Design, Graphic design, and Textile Design. VALT students included in the exhibition are Larry Harris, Alfredo Jose Gonzales Perez, and Smeet Yang. Nameer Fearce, Charlita Johnson, and Aurora Fields have been working with artists and teachers Caroline Kent and Nate Young as Studio Arts Apprentices at Juxtaposition Arts. Here they have been exploring how to have a studio practice through critique, exploration of materials, and exposure to contemporary artists through lectures, outings in the community and visiting artists. All classes at Juxtaposition Arts are free.

Camden Music School Spring Term Registration – Begins March 12!
CMS teaches people of all ages and abilities with a joyful spirit – at two convenient locations.
Spring term runs for ten weeks, April 9 – June 16.

Choose from:

  • Vocal and instrumental lessons
  • Musikgarten early childhood classes for newborns to age 8
  • Music theory and songwriting classes
  • Ensembles – rock ‘n roll, hand drums, choir and more, for youth and adults

Clara Saprasa: Survival

Clara began dropping in to our gallery, attending our gallery talks, getting to know us in late 2010. We learned she is a member of the Art History Channel and that her paintings will be featured on the cable TV show “21st Century Artists” in March 2011. Clara has shown her work locally and in New York, Chicago, Kentucky and California.
