Workhouse Theatre presents “Talley’s Folly”

February 24-March 11 | Directed by Mark Hauck

Winner of the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this is the charming, moving love story of Matt, a Jewish refugee, and Sally, black sheep of the prosperous Talley family, on Independence Day, 1944. Matt has come to rural Missouri to woo Sally, but has been run off the place by her anti-Semitic brothers, and has taken refuge in the family’s dilapidated boathouse down by the river. Sally sneaks away to tell Matt to leave her alone, but she may have another agenda. Smart and feisty, Sally doesn’t fit into society much better than Matt does. Over the course of a magical evening, the two of them begin to wonder if perhaps they’ll fit

Impressions – Northside

Northside Arts Collective members are invited to exhibit their visual art in a juried show at UROC in March. Electronic submissions are due January 27.

UROC is the University of Minnesota’s Urban Outreach/Engagement Center, where hundreds of community and regional movers and shakers meet, on Plymouth near Penn (across from Urban League). Work in the main gallery also gets exposure to the many academic professionals who office or meet at the facility. Hawona Sullivan Janzen, curator, reports that some sales have resulted from past exhibits.

NAC is also seeking music (non-amplified) and other performance art for short programs during the opening which might also be captured in some form to be included in the March exhibit.

Early visual submissions will have the best chance of being used in the printed, media, and on-line promotion of the show.

The gallery can accommodate small items such as jewelry, and large sculptural items, as well as anything that can hang from a rod system. Work is insured while at UROC.

To submit your work: Send email with images (no larger than 1 MB), or with a link to your online gallery identifying the images you’re submitting. Label the email with your name and “UROC” in the subject line. Provide the dimensions, medium, and price, and your contact information. Up to six submissions per member. Deadline: January 27. Email: connect@nacarts.org.

Work will be juried from electronic images and ultimately, in person during installation, by Hawona Sullivan Janzen. Work chosen will need to be on site in late February; artists are responsible for delivering. Receiving dates and times will be announced later.

FAQ’s:

Q: Do I have to be a current NAC member to submit work?
A: Yes. You may join or renew and pay the $35 individual membership with your submission by mailing to: Northside Arts Collective, P.O. Box 11995, Minneapolis, MN 55411. Household memberships are $55 and cover all members of the household. Students are $25, businesses and organizations $85.

Q: I’m not sure if I’m a member already, who can I check with?
A: Send an email to jeanne.fish@nacarts.org.

Q: Is this a themed show?
A: Only in that if a piece makes an obvious geographic reference, the scene should be in North Minneapolis (Camden and Near North as defined by City of Minneapolis). Subjects can be abstract or concrete, simply the art of people living, working, or otherwise connected with this area and members of Northside Arts Collective).

Q: What are the framing requirements?
A: Framing must be serviceable, glass is not required. Canvases may be self-finished (the image wraps around). Photos may be mounted frameless on foamcore. No sawtooth hooks.

Q: Are there minimum or maximum size limitations?
A: Not at this time.

Q: I don’t have photos of my work, can I still submit?
A: Other NAC members have offered to photograph work for current members. A place and schedule will be posted; sign up ahead. If you cannot make one of those times, have a friend bring your work to one of the posted times.

Q: I have a triptych. Does that count as one submission?
A: Yes. Other linked but separate works, such as poetry that accompanies a painting, can be considered a single submission. If the jury has any questions or challenges, you will be contacted.

Q: How many artists will be chosen?
A: It depends on the number of submissions. Our goal is to show multiple works from each artist, and would like to have several artists showing.

Q: Is there anything else I have to do?
A: Artists chosen are expected to forward UROC’s promotional materials for the show, to their email lists, to attend the opening, and to pick up after the show ends.

Q: Is this a one-time thing or will there be other opportunities at UROC?
A: It depends on how this show goes. NAC may be able to hang on a few walls in the interior office area after the March show is done. UROC has offered this opportunity as a way to give experience to emerging artists, curators, teachers and leaders.

Q: What if someone wants to buy my artwork, does NAC expect a percentage of the sale?
A: Yes, 15 percent of the sale of artwork goes to NAC to defray operating expenses.

Local Authors Release Books about Child Sexual Abuse

Authors Christine Stark and Olga Trujillo will be reading from their books, Nickels and The Sum of My Parts, at the Loft Literary Center at 7:00pm on January 18th, 2012.

Both authors have written books on a timely subject given the Penn State and Syracuse University scandals. Child sexual abuse and its survival through dissociation are the topics of Christine Stark’s novel, Nickels: A Tale of Dissociation, and Olga Trujillo’s memoir, The Sum of My Parts: A Survivor’s Story of Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Nickels: A Tale of Dissociation follows a biracial girl named Little Miss So And So, from age 4 into adulthood. Told in a series of prose poems, Nickels‘ lyrical and inventive language conveys the dissociative states born of a world formed by persistent and brutal incest and homophobia. The dissociative states enable the child’s survival and, ultimately, the adult’s healing. The content is both heartbreaking and triumphant.

The Sum of My Parts is the incredible true story of Olga Trujillo, whose childhood was devastated by sexual abuse and violence. This memoir follows Olga as she splits herself into parts and develops dissociative identity disorder to cope with the abuse, and then struggles to merge these parts and overcome the disorder in adulthood.

Christine Stark is an award-winning writer, visual artist, and public speaker. Her fiction, poetry, and nonfiction have been published in periodicals, anthologies, and peer reviewed journals. She is a coauthor of the groundbreaking report “Garden of Truth: The Prostitution and Trafficking of Native Women in Minnesota” and a coeditor of Not for Sale, an international anthology about sexual violence. Her poem, “Momma’s Song”, was recorded by Fred Ho and the Afro Asian Ensemble and released as a double CD/manga titled Deadly She-Wolf Assassin at Armageddon and Momma’s Song. Christine has won awards for her writing, including a Pushcart nomination, a McKnight Award, and a Loft Mentor Series in creative nonfiction, along with others. She lives in Minneapolis with her partner, April.

Olga Trujillo is an attorney who works with communities on issues involving domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and the impact of trauma. A nationally renowned speaker, she has appeared in several training videos on domestic violence, including Cut it Out and A Survivor’s Story. She has received the Bud Cramer Leadership Award from the National Children’s Alliance and the Sunshine Lady Foundation Peace Award. Olga lives with her partner Casey, dogs, and cats on a small farm in Wisconsin.

A documentary film by Samantha Robinson for the Northside Arts Collective: This film project is an extension of a research project on the role of artists in urban redevelopment and gentrification that Samantha Robinson completed as a Lilly Fellow at Macalester College in the summer of 2009. She decided to use video, a …medium with which she had limited experience, to recount North Minneapolis residents’ memories and reimaginings of West Broadway. After months of wrangling artists, business owners, and politicians, filming interviews, and editing numerous hours of footage, She submitted a final cut of “Visions” to the 2009 Filmanthropist Project Competition, a local film competition for amateur filmmakers with an emphasis on socially conscious filmmaking, in December. Last month, “Visions” was selected as a top ten film, screened at the Oak Street Cinema, and awarded second place. From a letter to the Northside Arts Collective Board of Directors, “I hope that this piece of artwork contributes to the achievement of the NAC’s goals, because the process of its creation was altered the course of my life.”, As a result of this project, she is currently enrolled in two media arts courses at MCAD and plan to pursue an MFA in Film Production.
