Winner of the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this is the charming, moving love story of Matt, a Jewish refugee, and Sally, black sheep of the prosperous Talley family, on Independence Day, 1944. Matt has come to rural Missouri to woo Sally, but has been run off the place by her anti-Semitic brothers, and has taken refuge in the family’s dilapidated boathouse down by the river. Sally sneaks away to tell Matt to leave her alone, but she may have another agenda. Smart and feisty, Sally doesn’t fit into society much better than Matt does. Over the course of a magical evening, the two of them begin to wonder if perhaps they’ll fit
