SUNplug’d, with Voice of Culture Drum and Dance to perform at the Historic Capri Theater – March 11, 2010
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Northside Arts Collective (NAC) presents SUNplug’d, with Voice of Culture Drum and Dance for an evening of Afro-pop and traditional African drumming at the Historic Capri Theater in North Minneapolis.
Born in the British Cameroons, Kenn Wanaku is descendant from the Kom Kingdom tribe, and grew up on a coffee farm in the West African grass fields of Adamawa. Through competitive music, dance and arts festivals, Kenn was exposed to the various cultures of many of the tribes located in this densely concentrated region. His music reflects on the African human experience, filled with catastrophic stories of slavery, wars, the environment to basic food, shelter and clothing problems. Kenn is backed by a top notched band consisting of drum, bass and violin.
“Wanaku intersperses a judicious touch with delicate guitar, singing warm as a sunny day…the music is hypnotic” – Dwight Hobbes. Twin Cities Daily Planet
Opening the night is Northsider Kenna Sarge who has been performing and teaching for more than 20 years. Voice of Culture Drum and Dance is an exuberant troupe of her students who will take us on a historical journey, exploring the connections between the modern and the ancient through traditional African drum, dance, and dress. Since they share a common thread of African and African-American struggles, you can expect an amazing collaboration between SUNplug’d and Voice of Culture Drum and Dance at some point in the night.
“(Sarge) shares the inner workings of African cultural ancestry…a true mother of culture” – Alaina L. Lewis, Insight News
